Lake Fishing Techniques

At Snowy Valleys Fly Fishing, we tailor every lake session to suit the conditions and your goals. From drifting open water to spotting edge cruisers, each day is flexible and technique-driven.

We often fish Loch-style, using wind to drift across larger lakes like Eucumbene and Talbingo, covering water with fan-cast patterns and working flies through different depths. When visibility is good, we’ll switch to polaroiding, spotting trout near the surface or along the shore and making accurate casts to sighted fish.

For deeper edges or when trout are cruising the margins, we often fish streamers on intermediate or sink-tip lines—a more active method using single, larger flies to provoke a reaction near structure or drop-offs. In quieter moments, nymphs can be fished suspended or retrieved to imitate insects feeding mid-water. And when conditions allow, there’s nothing more rewarding than rising fish on dry flies.

If trout push into the shallows, we’ll often step off the boat and fish the bank—especially around margins or inflows. Every trip includes a mix of methods to suit the day.

From drifting to stalking, deep to dry—lake days are hands-on, visual, and full of opportunity.
